Jobs of the jewish inhabitants

Supposedly most of the jews had been cattle-dealers or butchers, because cattle-dealing was very important in the Eifel area. Only three of them are known to me by name:

  • Moritz Schmitz was a butcher. His shop had been closed by the Nazis in 1935 because of pretended uncleanliness.
  • Moritz Siegler was a farmer and cattle-dealer. His shop was closed in 1938.
  • Bernhard Siegler was a cattle-dealer in Kaisersesch and also after his emmigration to the USA.

Some jews have probably worked additionaly or as their main occupation as farmers, as we saw at the example of Moritz Siegler, because that was one of the main occupations in the Eifel. Other jews worked as traders, so did Max Schmitz, who owned a textileshop and "Auschels" Berta, thats what the family Siegler was called in the speech of the people, sold haberdashery and linen. There are also stories told about Moritz Lang, who walked through the village with a bell and sold fish.
